Undone

2D animation, coloring, shading

Creators: Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Kate Purdy
Directed by: Hisko Hulsing

Undone is an streaming animated series. It premiered on September 13, 2019, on Amazon Prime Video.
Undone is animated by Rotoscoping technique. That means all the scenes were first shot with real-live actors and then traced in black and white. This was done by the animators of Minnow Mountain in Texas, America.
At Submarine in Amsterdam, the task of me and my fellow 2D animators was to provide coloring and shading to the rotoscoped shots.

Shading process

Coloring: Every frame of a rotoscoped shot is colored in.
Synth shading: The shadows and shades from the original video are processed through several filters and then applied to the animation.
Style Frames: Additional shading is painted in digitally by hand in selected frames.
Shading: The extra shading of the style frames is applied throughout the shot.
The shots then went on to other teams at Submarine such as the 3D and Compositing teams.

I worked an numerous shots for the whole show. Mostly styleframes, coloring and shading. Here is a clip of episode 2 where worked on. I did the 2D animation of the flowers and coloring and shading on both the Flowers and Alma.
